Privacy by design

Your documents stay on your device.

Most online PDF tools work by uploading your file to a server, processing it, and sending it back. PDFtone skips that step entirely — every merge, edit, and export happens in your browser's memory.

  • Files are never transmitted to a server
  • Nothing is stored once you close the tab
  • Works even with sensitive or confidential documents
Your device — file opened
Your device — pages edited

Questions, answered

If you don't see what you're looking for, reach out and we'll help directly.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

No. PDFtone processes everything in your browser using your device's own resources. Files are read into memory, edited, and exported without ever being sent over the network.

What file types can I work with?

You can bring in PDFs, Word documents (.docx), spreadsheets (.xlsx, .xls, .csv), and images (PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF, BMP). Each one is converted into pages you can arrange alongside the rest.

Is there a limit on file size or number of pages?

PDFtone doesn't impose its own limits — the practical ceiling is your device's available memory, which is typically large enough for everyday documents.

Do I need to create an account?

No. The free tools are available immediately with no sign-up. An account will only be needed for optional team features down the line.

Will PDFtone work without an internet connection?

Once the page has loaded, most tools continue to work offline, since processing happens locally rather than on a server.

Every plan runs entirely in your browser — your files are never uploaded to a server. Paid plans raise your daily limit, remove ads, and add more devices & priority support. Prices shown in USD ($); other countries see a fixed local price set from today's exchange rate, so it won't drift with the market.

Pricing questions

What counts as one "upload" against my daily limit?

Each file you bring in to edit or convert counts as one. The limit resets every 24 hours, so a Pro plan gives you 50 files every day, not 50 in total.

Can I change plans later?

Yes. You'll be able to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel from your dashboard at any time — changes apply from your next billing cycle.

What currency are plans in?

All plans are priced in USD ($) so pricing is the same wherever you are. Your card is charged in dollars; your bank converts to your local currency at their rate.

Why we built this

Most online PDF editors are built around an upload-process-download loop. That means your contract, your ID scan, or your tax return takes a round trip through someone else's infrastructure before you ever see the result.

Modern browsers are powerful enough to do real document work — rendering pages, editing them, exporting to other formats — without any of that. PDFtone is built entirely on open-source libraries that run client-side: pdf.js for rendering, pdf-lib for editing and export, mammoth.js and SheetJS for Word and Excel conversion.

"If a tool needs your file to leave your computer to do its job, that's a sign the job could be done differently."

That's the whole premise. Everything you see in the workspace — merging, signing, converting, compressing — happens in memory, in your browser tab, and disappears when you close it (unless you choose to save your work to an account).

Privacy by default, not by setting

There's no toggle for "don't upload my file" because nothing is ever uploaded in the first place.

No account tax

The core toolkit is free and usable without signing up. Accounts exist for people who want saved projects and sync — not as a gate.

Built on open foundations

PDFtone leans on well-established open-source libraries rather than reinventing PDF parsing from scratch, so the tools are reliable and battle-tested.

Honest pricing

Paid plans raise page limits and add account features — they don't unlock tools that were artificially withheld on the free tier.

Try it on your own files

No account, no upload, no waiting.

General

What is PDFtone?

PDFtone is a browser-based PDF workspace. You can merge, reorder, mark up, sign, compress, and convert PDFs (and other file types) without installing anything or creating an account.

Do I need to install anything?

No. PDFtone runs in your web browser. Once the page has loaded, most tools continue to work even if you go offline, since processing happens locally.

Which browsers are supported?

PDFtone works in any modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on both desktop and mobile.

Privacy

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

No. PDFtone processes everything in your browser using your device's own resources. Files are read into memory, edited, and exported without being sent over the network.

What happens to my files when I close the tab?

Nothing is stored. Unless you're signed in and choose to save a project, everything in the workspace exists only in that browser tab and is gone once it's closed.

What does cloud sync (on paid plans) actually store?

If you opt into cloud sync, the project file itself is stored on our servers so it can be opened from another device. It's entirely optional and off by default.

Tools & files

What file types can I work with?

You can bring in PDFs, Word documents (.docx), spreadsheets (.xlsx, .xls, .csv), and images (PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF, BMP). Each one is converted into pages you can arrange alongside the rest.

Is there a limit on file size or number of pages?

Each plan has a per-file page limit (see the pricing page). Within that limit, the practical ceiling is your device's available memory.

I converted a PDF to Word/Excel and the layout looks slightly different — why?

PDF→Word and PDF→Excel conversion rebuilds the document from the text positions on each page. Complex layouts (multi-column text, unusual spacing) may come out slightly differently than the original.

Account & billing

Do I need an account?

No — the free tools are available immediately with no sign-up. An account is only needed for saved projects, cloud sync, and team features.

How do I change or cancel my plan?

Once logged in, head to your dashboard's billing section to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel. Changes take effect from your next billing date.

How do I delete my account?

Account deletion is available from your dashboard's account settings. This permanently removes your saved projects and personal details.

Most "free" online PDF tools work the same way: you upload your file, a server somewhere processes it, and a few seconds later you download the result. For a one-off task that might feel harmless — but it means your contract, ID scan, or tax return takes a round trip through someone else's infrastructure before you ever see the output.

What changed

Modern browsers are far more capable than the "upload box" model assumes. They can render PDF pages, manipulate documents, and write new files — all using your device's own memory and processor. PDFtone is built entirely on this idea: every tool runs as JavaScript in your browser tab, and your file never leaves it.

The pieces underneath

We didn't reinvent PDF parsing from scratch — that would be slow and error-prone. Instead, PDFtone leans on a handful of well-established open-source libraries:

  • pdf.js renders PDF pages to the screen, so you can see exactly what you're working with.
  • pdf-lib handles editing and export — merging pages, drawing text and shapes, and writing the final PDF.
  • mammoth.js and SheetJS convert Word documents and spreadsheets into pages PDFtone can work with, and back again.

What stays local — and what doesn't

Everything in the workspace — merging, signing, marking up, converting — happens in memory and disappears when you close the tab. The only exception is if you're signed in and choose to save a project: at that point, the file is stored on our servers so it can sync across your devices. That's opt-in, off by default, and the rest of the toolkit never needs it.

The trade-off

Doing the work locally means the practical limit on file size is your device's available memory rather than a server queue. For everyday documents — contracts, reports, scanned forms — that's rarely a problem. For very large files (think hundreds of high-resolution pages), a lower-powered device may need to use the compression tool first.

The result is a PDF toolkit that behaves the way a desktop app would: instant, private, and entirely under your control.

← All posts

It's a common situation: you've got a signed contract as a PDF, a scanned signature page as an image, and a cover letter you wrote in Word — and you need all of it as a single, ordered PDF. PDFtone's Merge tool is built for exactly this.

Step by step

  1. Open the workspace and drop in your files — PDFs, Word documents (.docx), spreadsheets (.xlsx, .xls, .csv), and images (PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF, BMP) can all go in at once.
  2. Watch them become pages. Each file is converted into one or more pages and added to the page list on the left. A Word document might become several pages; an image becomes a single page sized to fit.
  3. Drag to reorder. Click and drag any page thumbnail to put it where you want — for example, moving your cover letter to the front.
  4. Rotate if needed. If a scanned page came in sideways, use the rotate button on its thumbnail to fix it before exporting.
  5. Export and choose "Download PDF — all pages" to get a single merged file.

A few tips

Order matters: pages export in the order they appear in the left-hand list, so arrange everything before exporting. If you only need some of the pages in the final document, tick the checkboxes on the pages you want and use "Download PDF — selected pages only" instead.

Because everything happens in your browser, very large batches of high-resolution images can use a noticeable amount of memory. If you run into slowdowns, try compressing image-heavy pages first, or split the work into a couple of smaller merges.

That's it — no account, no upload, and the merged file never touches a server on its way to your downloads folder.

← All posts

Printing a document just to sign it, scan it, and email it back is one of those small frictions that adds up. PDFtone's Sign tool lets you add a signature directly to a PDF in your browser, with nothing to print or scan.

Two ways to sign

From the workspace toolbar, choose Signature and you'll see two options:

  • Draw — use your mouse, trackpad, or finger on a touchscreen to draw your signature freehand, just like signing on paper.
  • Type — type your name and PDFtone renders it in a handwriting-style font, useful when a quick, legible signature is enough.

Placing and adjusting it

Once you've created a signature, it's added to the page as an image you can drag into position. Use the resize handle in the corner to make it bigger or smaller, and repeat the process if you need your signature on multiple pages — for example, initialing each page of a contract plus a full signature on the last.

A note on legal validity

PDFtone's Sign tool draws a signature image onto the page — it's a quick way to visually sign a document, similar to printing, signing, and scanning, but faster. It doesn't apply a cryptographic digital signature or certificate. For documents that specifically require a certified digital signature (some legal, government, or financial forms), check what your signing requirements are before relying on this for that purpose.

For everyday paperwork — agreements, forms, sign-off sheets — it's a quick way to get a document signed and back in someone's inbox without leaving your browser.

Once approved, you'll receive one tracking link tied to your account. Use that same link everywhere — it's how we know a subscriber came from you.

3

Earn monthly, automatically

Every subscriber who signs up through your link and keeps a paid plan earns you 10% of their payment every month for as long as they stay subscribed. Commissions are tracked and paid out through our partner system.

Example

What it could look like

Earnings are simple: you get 10% of every active subscriber's payment, every month, for as long as they keep their plan.

5 subscribers on Medium ($4.99)≈ $2.50 / month
20 subscribers on Medium ($4.99)≈ $10 / month
100 subscribers on Medium ($4.99)≈ $50 / month

Higher plans earn more — 10% of a $9.99 Unlimited subscriber is about $1.10/month, each.

Partner FAQ

How long does approval take?

We review applications by hand, usually within a few days. You'll see your application status on your dashboard while you wait.

Why do I only get one link?

A single link per partner is what makes tracking reliable — every subscriber who signs up through it is matched back to your account. Use that one link across all your posts, videos, and ads.

What if my application isn't approved?

We'll let you know by email. You're welcome to apply again later, for example once you've grown your audience.

When and how do I get paid?

You earn 10% of every payment from subscribers you refer, for as long as they stay subscribed. Payouts run on the 1st working day of each month for the previous month's earnings, with a $50 minimum balance (anything below rolls over to the next month). Funds arrive in 2–5 business days — paid to your bank via Stripe, or to your PayPal account.

Is there a limit to how much I can earn?

No — there's no cap on the number of subscribers you can refer or the amount you can earn each month.
